Morse Clamp & Go Dolly Handle for Drum Dollies: A Douglas Equipment Review

Morse Clamp & Go Dolly Handle for Drum Dollies: A Douglas Equipment ReviewDrums are found everywhere in industrial and warehouse settings. Whether 55 gallon or 30 gallon, constructed of steel, plastic or fiber, found on a shipping dock or factory floor, drums are one of the most commonly used containers to store and transport liquids and solid materials.

Moving loaded drums around inside a facility can be a challenge, however. Their large size can make them awkward to handle. They can be heavy – a fully loaded drum may easily weigh a thousand pounds! With this much weight, safety becomes a concern. It’s important to find a way to move drums that keeps workers safe from injury, and that helps minimize the risk of drums tipping, falling or spilling their contents.

The first step to make moving a drum easier is to place it upon a drum dolly. The drum can then be rolled across a smooth, level floor. Safety issues still remain, however. Workers’ fingers can be injured if they are trapped between the drum and other objects.

Studies show that if you push against the top of a drum that is mounted on a dolly, most of the weight is transferred to the front wheels of the dolly. If the wheels hit an uneven crack, a hole in the floor, or if you are moving the drum down a slope, excess weight on the front wheels can cause the drum to tip over.

The safest way to move a drum on a dolly is to push or pull it from the bottom of the drum. What’s the best way to do that?

The Morse Clamp+Go Dolly Handle
Douglas Equipment carries the patented Clamp+Go Dolly Handle, which is made by the Morse Manufacturing Company. Known as “The Specialist in Drum Handling Equipment,” Morse has been in business since 1923, and focuses on making equipment to efficiently and safely lift, transport and empty heavy drums.

The Clamp+Go Dolly Handle securely grips the sidewall of a round dolly. You can then pull the dolly from that low position, keeping the weight of the drum distributed evenly on all four wheels of the dolly. By maneuvering the drum from well below its center of gravity, the drum will be much more stable. Using the handle, it’s easy to maneuver the drum into a tight area or restricted space.

How It Works

Morse has cleverly designed the Clamp+Go Dolly Handle with features that are so unique, it was granted a US patent.

  • Adjustable for Dolly Wall Heights – The Clamp+Go Dolly Handle is designed to be used on round drum dollies, with sidewalls of 2 inches, 2.5 inches or 3 inches in height. Simply move a quick-pin to one of three positions, and the adjustment can be made in seconds. The Clamp+Go will work on all round drum dollies made by Morse, and those made by many other manufacturers, as well.
  • Quick Engage – It’s easy to attach the Clamp+Go Dolly Handle to a dolly. You simply position the top claws of the clamp assembly over the edge of the dolly’s sidewall. Because the Clamp+Go is securely constructed, you can use your foot to align the claws in the proper position. Give the handle a quick downward push, and you’ll hear it click into place as it securely clamps onto the dolly. That’s it!
  • Quick Disengage – The Clamp+Go Dolly Handle has a toe plate; when you lift up on the toe plate with your foot, the Clamp+Go will disengage by releasing its bottom jaws from the dolly sidewall. Pull up on the handle to remove it from the drum dolly. You can easily clamp it to another dolly by following the steps above to engage the quick coupling mechanism. This makes using one Clamp+Go Dolly Handle with many different dollies very easy.
  • Handle Storage – You can leave the Clamp+Go Dolly Handle attached to a dolly sidewall when it’s not in use. A built in magnet in the handle allows you to keep the handle in the vertical position, because the magnet secures the handle to the clamp. That way, the handle won’t fall down on its own, possibly striking someone; nor will it pose a tripping hazard as it might if left lying on the floor.

If you move drums on dollies within your facility, then do yourself a favor – give Douglas Equipment a call, and talk to our Customer Service representatives to find out how the Clamp+Go Dolly Handle can make moving those drums easier, safer and more efficient.

The Clamp+Go Dolly Handle is ideal in other situations as well. For example, large potted plants are often kept on dollies in nurseries or retail stores. If the dollies have a sidewall, workers can attach the Clamp+Go Dolly Handle to the potted plant’s dolly, and easily move the plant from one place to another within the store or greenhouse area.

The Clamp+Go Dolly Handle is made in the USA, and carries a limited two-year warranty.

A Note About Square Drum Dollies

Sometimes square drum dollies are used to transport drums. These have a square platform with four rounded corners, which are turned up to hold a drum in position. The Clamp+Go Dolly Handle will not work on these square dollies, because the Clamp+Go is made to grip the sidewall of a round dolly – and because square dollies have no sidewall, there is nothing for the Clamp+Go Dolly Handle to grip.
